INDIANA HORNSTONE SLABS |
Indiana Hornstone has always been one of the more desirable North American cherts. Much favored by both prehistoric and modern knappers. The deposits are located primarily in Harrison and Crawford Counties in Southern Indiana. While all prehistoric men made heavy use of the nodules, Woodland period knappers mined it and made cache blades by the tens of thousands. The exquisite Fulton Turkeyails were also made from this flint. The deposits have been stripped by modern excavating equipment while digging commercial property, basements, or just to obtain the nodules for knapping. These deposits are pretty much depleted at this time. What remains is either inside state protected property or has modern subdivisions sitting on it. I doubt any new deposits will ever be opened up (if they exist), at least not in my lifetime. When the nodules were available I cut them almost daily for many years. Lots of heartbreak is involved in this, as in my experience more than 3/4 have concrete like inclusions inside the nodules. Also even though mined from several feet in depth, there are still many cracks in the nodules to deal with. Many of you have bought pieces from me over the years at knapins. I have NEVER sold these premium slabs at knapins or on my site before. I'm proud to offer premium Indiana Hornstone slabs for sale. These slabs will be clean and crack free. Also there will be none of the concretions or inclusions that plague the majority of Indiana Hornstone. These were selected from 15 years of cutting many tons of nodules. I will offer these for a limited time. Don't mss this oppprtunity to get a few pieces of this fine chert. As the pics show a good percentage will have a bullseye. They are priced by the inch. |
